AmeriCorps and CEDAM
AmeriCorps engages more than 75,000 Americans in intensive service each year at nonprofits, schools, public agencies and community and faith-based groups across the country.
AmeriCorps programs do more than move communities forward; they serve their members by creating jobs and providing pathways to opportunity for people entering the nonprofit field. AmeriCorps places thousands of Americans into intensive service positions where they learn valuable work skills, earn money for education, and develop an appreciation for citizenship.
Since 2009, CEDAM has housed the Michigan Foreclosure Prevention Corps which responded to the foreclosure crisis by placing AmeriCorps members at housing counseling agencies to provide intake services and promote foreclosure prevention programs.
During the 2014-2015 program year…
- AmeriCorps members provided 4,587 at-risk homeowners with intake services. An additional 14,984 individuals were reached through community outreach, mailings and presentations.
- The members provided more than 30,000 hours of service to their host agencies.
- This year, members serve at 20 non-profits across Michigan.
CEDAM was awarded a three-year AmeriCorps State grant to host the Michigan Financial Opportunity Corps (MFOC). The MFOC was created to combat the unfortunate truth that 40% of Michigan households struggle to afford the basic necessities of housing, childcare, food, health care and transportation. The MFOC is working in partnership with 15 organizations across Michigan to place 21 AmeriCorps members in communities where they will facilitate financial education classes, host Show Me The Money Day events, increase the capacity of VITA free tax programs and help individuals facing foreclosure.

Rural Opportunity VISTA Program
We’re also happy to announce that we have received funding from the Corporation for National and Community Service to host an additional ten member AmeriCorps VISTA program. In partnership with Michigan Main Street (MMS) and the Council of Michigan Foundations, the Rural Opportunity VISTA program’s members will provide capacity building to organizations by expanding on existing programming or creating a new program from the ground up!
